The Mareeba Rodeo Drive In is getting set for the beginning of their peak season. The US summer (Queenslands winter) is when a lot of the big movies get released , which makes it the perfect time to wrap up and head up to Mareeba to the Rodeo Drive In , where you can view 2 of the latest films under the starry skies at their outdoor cinema. Blockbuster movies such as Shrek Forever After, Toy story 3, Eclipse and a Twilight marathon are featured in the blockbuster program, which no doubt will pull in some great crowds. Situated about 45 minutes from Cairns, it’s a great family night out.
The Rodeo Drive In is the last remaining drive in cinema in the far north and one of only 11 remaining in the country! It is open every Friday and Saturday evening and shows 2 of the latest releases every night. Martin and Helen Jones have run their original 1960′s drive in movie cinema for the previous 4 years – it is their passion.
The projection room is like a virtual museum with all original 35mm Century projectors. The owners giggled, “some people think we just press play on a giant DVD player!” The couple invite anyone who would like to have a personal tour of the projection room in action!
The drive in still has the old fashioned speakerboxes you place inside your car, although many choose to tune their radio into the ‘drive in frequency’ and hear their favourite movies through their own car stereo.
It is a very family friendly place as mums and dads don’t have to stress if the kids talk and run around as they don’t disturb other patrons, as mums and dads can spread out away from other customers, unlike being at the multiplex.
