Games Consoles Are The Second Most Used Device For Watching Internet TV
Live Internet tv is growing in importance and more and more being chosen by viewers in the home. One interesting statistic has emerged when looking at the type of hardware used to watch online streaming, so says market inquiry group iSuppli.
Wifi connected game consoles are the second most used platform (after computers) for fire up the thousands of movies and tv shows available from the web. In 2009, the video game console category accounted for 52% of all spirit room consumer electronics devices shipped with aboard broadband connectivity.
So now games consoles do not just have to compete with each other, said iSuppli analyst Pamela Tufegdzic, who has authored the soon-to-be released “Gaming Platforms Evolve Beyond Gaming – Console, hand-held and Mobile Gaming Continues to Battle” report. “With consoles now allowing for Internet video-on-postulate (VOD) serves to be streamed to televisions, the devices compete not only with STBs providing Internet Protocol Television (IPTV) but also with satellite providers, telcos and cable services,” she said. Their dual nature, which supports game play and Internet connectivity, make them a strong candidate for “winning the battle for the connected home,” she said.
Since the birth of internet tv, consoles are becoming a significant platform for viewers who want video-on-demand, according to iSuppli. In April, Sony said it would launch MLB.TV service on the PS3 for live streaming Major League baseball game coverage. Netflix, which has been available on the Microsoft Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, recently became available on the Nintendo Wii.
If you want to enter the man of on demand streaming, you do not need to invest in expensive new blu-ray players, internet connected tv sets or other set top devices. Just dust down your PS3, Xbox or Wii and get watching.
The survey also revealed that 36% of 18-24s and 30% of 25-34s say that they will be watching, and fully expect to view more television and video subject matter from the web. The quick availableness of live news online meant that 56% of 18-24s head to the web as soon as news breaks. Within this figure, 13% head to a newspapers website whilst 43% watch the news online.
James Kennedy, research executive at YouGov media consulting, said, “The music world was revolutionised with the introduction of downloading sites such as Napster. This transformation could now be shifting to the world of TV.”
The TV networks in the UK are embracing internet tv with tanginess, all the main channels along with cable and satellite networks all have a strong online presence. Of by nature the figures represent what is happening worldwide, so expect similar figures from other Countries.
